Stanishev: Fight against Corruption Is Our Top Priority

Prime Minister supported by business in state administration reform

‘The anti-corruption fight is a top priority for the government and we will fully rely on business's support for that', Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev said during his first meeting with the Bulgarian Business Leaders Forum Managing Board.

BBLF Chairman Maxim Behar handed his own copy of the Business Ethics Standard as well as a BBLF honorary pin to the Prime Minister. UK Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Jeremy Hill was also present at the meeting.

"We would like to stress that Bulgarian business will support all measures of the Cabinet for improving the business climate and for creating conditions for fair competition and high profit, achieved transparently and with a responsibility to society," Mr. Behar stated during the meeting.

VAT decrease, faster introduction of e-government, creating financial, human and technical capacity to allow the state to react immediately in case of crises and natural disasters - these were some of the recommendations given by the ten businessmen, attending the event.

"I am fully aware that, in order to comply with European standards for transparency, social policy, anti-corruption and shadow economy, the new government must collaborate with the private sector," PM Sergey Stanishev said . "We are relying on business's experience and advice in all sectors of our work, especially when it comes to introducing European regulations in state administration and eradicating corruption within the system."

The BBLF Managing Board recommended the introduction of an ethical standard for state administration staff, based on the principles of good corporate management, as well as more clarity and transparency in the public-private relations regulation.

"During its seven years of work in Bulgaria the Business Leaders Forum has proven that sustainable and positive development goes hand in hand with effective work in cooperation with the government", Ambassador Hill said. "Bulgarian companies are extremely active in their efforts in being good members of society and the new government should be their partner in this".

Mr. Maxim Behar also gave the Responsible Business Directory to the Prime Minister, expressing the hope that the number of companies making high profit and actively working for the good of society will double by the end of this government's term.
