Project Aim

Kaufland is the biggest private sector employer in the country and as such, it must set labor market trends. That is why the company constantly adapts its training and development strategy to keep it in line with the changing needs of its team of almost 7,500 people. Over the past few years, the company has been actively developing and upgrading its employer policy, which has transformed it into a preferred, trusted and highly appreciated employer. It’s no coincidence that since 2022 the retailer can praised itself with more than 50 awards in the field of employer branding. The company offers a secure and stable work environment, recognition of the accomplished results, excellent opportunities for development, competitive pay and a package of over 17 social benefits.

Project Target Group

The project is implemented throughout the three Kaufland structures in Bulgaria – branch network, Central office and Central warehouse, and targets all of the current almost 7500 company employees. It has two main objectives – retention, in-house professional development or upskilling of the current team and talent-scouting and attraction for all company units in the country.

Project Duration

Kaufland offers a secure and stable job, competitive pay, many social benefits, mentorship, trainings and career development opportunities. These actions are part of the company's long-term commitment to comprehensive employee care. In 2023, Kaufland implemented a significant improvement to the social benefits package, and the overall investment in remuneration and social security and health insurance saw a 19% growth. The total investment in internal trainings for 2023 is nearly BGN 400, 000.

Project Activities

The care for the employees and their development is a central priority for Kaufland. The company constantly endeavors to foster the so-called “learning culture”.Kaufland organizes an average of 6 training events per year for each employee, providing possibilities for mentorship, soft skills development and leadership potential of its talents, language courses, various trainings and workshops for personal and professional development, and more. For 2023 only, more than 7 248 employees participated in the retailer’s internal training programs. The company's team members provide valuable feedback through various means of communication. As a result, employees have the opportunity to share their personal opinion and ideas. Through a two-way feedback communication, the company keeps the training resources and activities up-to-date and aligned with its most important stakeholders – its team. Kaufland is an active investor in young talents development through its early career start programs that facilitate their professional advancement and enhance their competences. Additionally, the company is an active partner in a number of initiatives for the career development of young generation

Project Results

The strategic programs related to employee training, development and motivation, give the company an additional advantage and ability to retain qualified personnel over time. An average of46% of the employees stay in the company for over 5 years, while 80% of the management have been internally developed and promoted. In the beginning of 2024, for the sixth consecutive year, the company defended the Top Employer certificate awarded by the prestigious independent international Top Employers Institute. From the beginning of 2022 until now, Kaufland Bulgaria managed to consolidate its best practices in the human capital management by winning than 50 awards in significant employer branding contests in the country.
