Project Aim
With the Beekeeper for a Day 2.0 project, our objective is to continue our sustainable program for Bulgarian nature conservation and support the preservation of 3M new bees, offering targeted assistance to their caretakers - the beekeepers. Our goal is to inspire hundreds of volunteers: our employees, their friends, families, and children, to collectively support the preservation of biodiversity in local ecosystems. With the aid of both young and seasoned volunteers, we assembled three massive hotels for wild pollinators, the first of their kind in Bulgaria. These initiatives significantly contribute to maintaining the balance of biodiversity in urban environments. We achieved our objectives step by step, effectively and sustainably, through focused activities, prevention, and education.
Project Target Group
The project focuses on two main target groups: beekeepers nationwide, who receive material donations and participate in project activities, and over 300 employees and their friends, families, and children engaged in voluntary work to establish conditions for caring for about 3 million new bees. Another target is the wider public, reached through an effective communication campaign, involving over 200,000 individuals in the cause of biodiversity conservation in the country.
Project Duration
For second consecutive year, the largest volunteer event dedicated to bees in Bulgaria, the Beekeeper for a Day initiative, naturally enhances our company's strategic commitment to environmental conservation and biodiversity, aligning with our CSR priorities for over a decade. Over the past four years, our For Our Nature initiative, with the projects Adopt a Beehive, Bee Museum, and volunteer events with over 1600 participating employees, scales our commitment towards sustainability in future
Project Activities
Organizational activities: together with our partners we assess the needs of the target groups, invite expert beekeepers, provide specialized equipment and materials, develop a methodology for beneficiary selection, and secure a venue for volunteer activities. Communication: articles and interviews with beekeepers were published on our and partner social media channels, both internally and externally, highlighting the results from the first edition in 2022; shared the new goals and needs of the cause. The internal campaign emphasized the urgency and how we can care for bees with an attractive visual design to engage further the employees. Externally, the campaign aimed to popularize the cause in society. Volunteer and donation activities: This edition of Beekeeper for a Day, part of our biggest volunteer initiative TELUS Days of Giving, happening since 2013, gathered 300+ volunteers who dedicated 2500+ hours, is support of 50 beekeepers. They built 3 large hotels for wild pollinators, the first of their kind in Bulgaria, along with 50 hives, 1000 frames, and planted 3 gardens with 200 nectar-bearing plants. Dozens of employees joined with their children in the activities.
Project Results
In our partnership with Istinski med, our goals and priorities are providing sustainable financial and material support to beekeepers nationwide, preserving biodiversity in our nature, and increasing awareness on the subject. Through our activities, we support natural pollination of over 50B plants annually across 850 sq. km, resulting in a harvest of 1200+ t of agricultural products. As a result, honey producers increase annual income of 35K BGN (compared w/ prices in 2022). By constructing 3 large hotels for wild pollinators, we draw attention to these "invisible" pollinators and what we can contribute to saving them, both in urban and natural environments. One of the hotels for wild pollinators is donated to Sofia Zoo, equipped with specialized informational and educational materials.
