Project Aim
Researchers at the Bulgarian polar base "St. Kliment Ohridski” on Livingstone Island are working on projects related to the movement of the Earth's crust, changes in plant and animal life, the extent of global pollution, and the melting of glaciers as a result of global warming. As part of its efforts to contribute to environmental and climate protection, Kaufland has supported Bulgarian researchers for Antarctica by donating 10 tones of food to the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the Nikola Jonkov Vaptsarov Naval University at the end of 2022. In 2023, the largest retailer increased its support, donating more than 30 tons of food and non-food products for the needs of the scientists and crew of NIC 421 on their way to Antarctica and their stay at the South Pole.
Project Target Group
Kaufland and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute jointly implemented the historic 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition in which for the first time our scientists reached their polar base on the island Livingstone with a Bulgarian research vessel. Kaufland provided food for the crew of the military research ship as well as for the scientists for their stay at the South Pole. In 2023 the largest retailer increased its support for the 32nd expedition donating over 30 tones of food and non-food items.
Project Duration
Climate change is not an issue for the future, it is an issue that affects our whole society and we need to address now. Under the motto "Together Against Climate Change", Kaufland commits to concrete actions and ambitious targets as part of its efforts to contribute to environmental protection. Long-term support for Bulgarian scientists also translates into support for scientific research expeditions in the search for sustainable solutions in the fight against climate change.
Project Activities
For the first time Kaufland supported Bulgarian researchers for Antarctica when at the end of 2022 it donated 10 tons of food to the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the Nikola Jonkov Vaptsarov Naval University. Thus, for the first time our scientists sailed under the Bulgarian flag on board the ship "St. Sv. Cyril and Methodius" to the island of St. Livingston on 27 December 2022 to mark the beginning of the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. 26 pallets of products of all major food categories left for the Bulgarian base at the South Pole. They were delivered from Kaufland's central warehouse in the village of. Stryama directly to the port in Varna. With these, the company ensured balanced nutrition for both the ship's crew and the expedition members who are joining the voyage at the end of January to conduct their scientific research on the Ice Continent.
Kaufland also supported the Bulgarian polar expedition with more than 30 tones of products in 2023. NIC 421 will set sail on 8 November 2023 from Varna Marine Station. The donation amounts to over 30 tons - over 50 pallets of non-food items and products from all major food categories.
Project Results
Antarctica is the continent where 90% of the Earth's drinking water is found. Beneath the surface of the icy continent there are 300 lakes that hold the secrets of our planet's origins, and scientists believe there lies the solution to reverse the negative trend in climate change.
Kaufland has an ambitious climate strategy, which it is investing significant resources and taking concrete steps to implement. That is why the support for Bulgarian scientists working on the topic is long-term and sustainable over time. Each of the studies by Bulgarian polar researchers on the effects of climate change will provide knowledge that will serve to tackle climate change.
