Project Aim
The aim of the Vivacom Apprenticeship Program is to enable students from vocational schools in Bulgaria to acquire important skills via practical training. The program gives a better understanding for students of the learned material in school through the gaze of a real work environment, to affirm their knowledge and gain a clear picture of their field of study. The program is carried out through compulsory practice set by the Ministry of Education, which makes it socially significant not only for the labour market but also for the education system. Through the program, we promote and raise interest in positions that are important for society and the labour market in Bulgaria, but are not sufficiently topical among students. For the most successful we provide part-time job opportunity.
Project Target Group
The target group are students from 10,11, 12 grades from vocational schools with technical orientation and direct connection to telecom and IT business. The focus is not only on schools in Sofia, but also in Bulgaria or regions with a concentration of such profiled classes. The students are reached with live information meetings in the schools, by which the teachers, students, and their parents are introduced to the company, the positions and the development opportunities after the school year.
Project Duration
The apprenticeship program is one of Vivacom's long-running projects to develop young talents and gives students the opportunity to learn about the world of technology. Students' participation in the practicum is for a fixed period of 14 days for 64 school hours at the end of the school year. In the 2023 edition, over 230 students took part and for 2 months got an insider's view of one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy.
Project Activities
The project preparation starts at the beginning of the calendar year by contacting the schools, negotiating and signing a practice contract. The activities of the students and their mentors are explained and the departments in which they will practice are identified to be closest to the studied specialties. Students start their practice in groups and with theory about key services in the company. Each student follows a strict schedule and works in line with a pre-prepared program under the guidance of an experienced mentoring team, in a safe environment. This is an opportunity to get into a work environment for the first time and build habits that will benefit them hereafter, gaining specific knowledge and experience from each mentor. During the internship, each student has the opportunity to understand first-hand the duties and skills required in the telecommunications world by tackling small but important daily tasks.
Besides hands-on experience, interns set up a contact network. The practice ends with feedback to each student regarding its performance and issue of certificate for the successfully completed. The best and brightest among the students get a chance to start a job.
Project Results
The pilot edition of the Practicum is released in 2016 and 2023 was the largest ever. A total of over 300 students and over 100 mentors have participated in the 5 editions of the program so far. In the latest edition, there are 20 times more participants compared to the past years and 7 of them stay at Vivacom on a part-time basis, enabling them to combine learning and work. After positive feedback from students and parents, Vivacom made a strategic decision to open additional 1/2 time positions for students after the internship. In this way, the company supports young people with an interest in technology, starting right from school, giving them the opportunity to take the next step to a career development while learning the material.
