Project description

Project Aim

For four years now Kaufland Bulgaria has been a proud partner of the Credo Bonum Foundation and Smart Books Publishing House in one of the largest green campaigns not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe - Books for Waste. Participants are encouraged to collect and hand over recyclable plastics and in return receive books. Since the first edition of the initiative, hundreds of tonnes of plastic waste have been recycled and tens of thousands of books have been distributed. The aims of the project are to promote recycling and reading at the same time. The event is established as a platform for public discussion and promotion of the need to limit single-use plastic.

Project Target Group

The target group of the project is book lovers and sustainable lifestyle supporters, active people with environmental attitude. Given the strong educational element of the campaign, families with children and whole classes of students with their teachers are among the most loyal fans of Books for Waste. Thanks to the partnership with Kaufland, the initiative is growing significantly, reaching a record number of events in a record number of cities in 2022 - 15.

Project Duration

Kaulfand Bulgaria has been supporting Books for Waste since 2019. The company is a supporter of the initiative in the context of its long-term commitment to reduce single-use plastic and prevent its use. As part of the Schwarz Group, the company is implementing in Bulgaria the REset Plastic strategy against plastic pollution.

Project Activities

In 2022, Books for Waste held a national tour in a record 15 cities, marking the 10th anniversary of the campaign's launch. The first part of the tour was in May and June and included events at Kaufland parking lots in Karlovo, Vidin, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna, Ruse, Silistra, Haskovo, Kyustendil, Petrich and Stara Zagora. In the second stage in autumn, Books for Waste visited Burgas, Plovdiv, Yambol and Sofia. In addition, a special festival - the Green Square - took place in Sofia on the occasion of the anniversary. It was attended by more than 1,200 people, who, in addition to exchanging their plastic waste for books, took part in numerous thematic workshops, games, art installations and a music programme.

Project Results

With the cooperation of Kaufland, each year the initiative expands its scope and adds new cities to its unique tours. In 2022, more than 20 tonnes of plastic waste were collected and nearly 20,000 books were distributed - the best result since the first Books for Waste edition in 2012. In all the years since the start of the project, over 100 tons of plastic waste have been collected and subsequently recycled. 100 000 books have been distributed.
