Project Aim
On a global scale Shell is striving to cut in half the net carbon footprint of its operations by 2050. It plays an active role in the acceleration of the energy transition to low carbon sources in BG, too. The project has 2 focuses - Shell;s advocacy for the role of gas in the energy mix in BG, with gas representing a route to a low carbon future and to an accelerated energy transition and Shell;s focus on the low carbon future of its own operations in BG, demonstrated through many initiatives.
Project Target Group
The Bulgarian government, the business, NGOs and trade union are the major target groups. The project is targeted to the whole society, as the transition to low carbon sources will have a positive impact on the environment, but will also bring economic and social benefits.
Project Duration
Reports of the independent UK consultancy company Baringa, co-financed by Shell:
*2018: on the role of gas in decarbonizaton - https://bit.ly/363pEdl
*2019: on the energy transition in BG - https://bit.ly/2RosJPW and on the Nat. Energy and Climate Plans in Europe and implications in BG.
Project Activities
-Shell organized workshops after each report in order to raise awareness on these topics and to provoke a debate between the stakeholders–Min. of Energy (MoE), BG Energy Holding, power companies, NGOs, trade unions and media
-Shell supported the MoE for the improvement of the Nat. Climate and Energy Plan in line with the EU Commission’s comments. Together with Baringa it analysed the plans of countries dependent on coal in their energy mix and gave recommendations for BG
-Shell initiated a forum on the future of mobility, in which municipalities, business, academia and NGOs sought solutions for a more sustainable transport
-Shell is the first oil and gas company in BG to demonstrate support to the low carbon future by decreasing its own carbon footprint
-Shell uses 100% renewable energy at most retail stations in BG and introduced LED lighting, pilot projects for solar panels, etc
-Shell equipped 11 of its retail sites in BG with fast charging stations for electric vehicles
Project Results
-With its international experience and the reports Shell supported the government in improving the Nat. plan on energy and climate
-Shell contributed to finding a basis for consensus between the stakeholders involved in the energy transition in BG
-An annual saving of 7684 tonnes of CO2 emissions was achieved due to the use of 100% renewable energy in most Shell outlets in BG
-In 2019 Shell reduced the electricity consumption in its outlets in BG with 10% after the introduction of LED lighting
