NEK EAD is the largest producer of electricity from renewable sources in Bulgaria. The company occupies a central position in the Bulgarian electricity system with the production of electricity from 31 hydropower plants and pumped storage plants with a total installed capacity of 2739 MW in turbine mode and 932 MW in pumped storage mode. The company's flexible production capacities are a guarantee for the stability and uninterruptability of electricity supply and for the security of the Bulgarian electricity system. By producing electricity from hydropower, the company contributes to the achievement of the country's international commitments to increase the share of renewables in the overall energy balance and supports the integration of generation from renewable sources.
The company was established in 1991 and is part of Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH). For 2023. NEK is ranked No. 1 in terms of revenues in the energy sector and No. 5 of all companies in Bulgaria.
NEK is active in investment activities and and in line with European policies for green sustainable energy development NEK's projects are focused on more efficient use of water resources. The company manages some of the largest dams and hydropower facilities in the country with a total volume of 55% of the total regulated volume of water reservoirs in the Republic of Bulgaria.
