BBLF supports "Walk the World" - a TNT initiative

On June 7th at 10.00 am at Bistritsa, near Sofia, employees of TNT Bulgaria, UNDP representatives, their friends and relatives embarked for the seventh consecutive year on a worldwide walk to raise awareness about child hunger. Mr. Stamen Tassev, Executive Director of BBLF was amongst the participants becoming one of 300 000 people taking part around the globe in this initiative.

This year 2000 leva were raised with the efforts of the community in Bulgaria. The amount will be transferred to the account of UN WFP "School Feeding Support" in Tanzania, which provides food for the children there. Famous Bulgarian alpinist Doychin Vassilev again led the walk in the foothills of Vitosha Mountain together with TNT Bulgaria country general manager Ivan Vassilev.

The worldwide series of walks kicked off in Australia with a climb up Sydney Harbour Bridge. The largest walks took place on the African continent, with 64,000 people walking in 53 locations in Malawi and 50,000 people gathering in Tanzania. In Europe, the largest walk took place in Portugal with about 4,000 participants. In the Americas, walks began in New York City with a walk in Battery Park. In Latin America, walks ranged from a massive 30,000 participants in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa to just a few hundred determined walkers on the island of Trinidad.

Hundreds of supporters also joined a virtual online walk, where donations were counted as miles walked with the objective of ‘walking' 25,000 miles around the world. The online walk will remain open at www.wfp.org/walktheweb until the end of June.

TNT is a global mail and express delivery company serving more than 200 countries. Since 2002, they have been an active partner of WFP and to date have invested over $50 million in the partnership.  TNT founded Walk the World in 2003 as an engagement event for its employees.
