Workshop under the International Hotels Environment Initiative

Under the International Hotel Environment Initiative (IHEI) launched on November 30, 1999 (see What do we do), a workshop on environmentally friendly tourism was held by the BBLF at the Radisson SAS Grand Hotel.

Seventy-five representatives from the hotel businesses attended, including IHEI member companies Hilton and Sheraton. The workshop discussed many practical environmental examples.

An Annual Award for the hotelier with the best environmental performance was instituted. Experts from the Ministry of the Environment helped BBLF to formulate the questionnaire for setting the criteria for the award, which is a certificate from the Ministry of Environment. British Ambassador Richard Stagg announced that UK Embassy will sponsor the best hotel manager with an insight visit to a UK hotel. The second award would be a free English language course at the British Council for one of the hotel's employees .

Participants expressed hopes that small and medium sized hotels would take part in the competition.
