Shell Sustainability Report 2016

Each year, Shell releases the Shell Sustainability Report describing Shell’s progress to deliver energy in a responsible way and the company’s contribution to the energy transition. Sustainability continues to be at the core of Shell’s business decisions.

The Sustainability Report 2016 outlines the company’s global approach to sustainability and covers Shell’s environmental, social and safety performance for the year. The report opens with an introduction from Shell’s Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden.

This is followed by an overview of the topics that matter most to readers including Shell’s role in the energy transition, how the company manages its operations and its work with others.

The activities reviewed in the Sustainability Report 2016 include:

  • Insight into how Shell runs its operations to avoid harm to people and to manage its impact on the environment;
  • Shell’s work to share benefits where the company operates by creating jobs, sourcing from local suppliers and supporting community development projects;
  • Its production of cleaner-burning natural gas;
  • Shell’s most relevant or prominent sustainability topics, highlighting those that are most closely related to the United Nation’s sustainable development goals;
  • Insight into the company’s lower-carbon research and development investments; and
  • Shell’s investment into lower-carbon energy opportunities, including advanced biofuels, hydrogen-based fuels and other lower-carbon sources of energy.
