GLOBUL Directed 4 Tons Of Old Phones, Batteries And Accessories To Recycling

In 2013 GLOBUL collected 4 tons of obsolete mobile phones, batteries and accessories in its retail network and directed it to recycling. The company also saved over 150 tons of paper and about 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

GLOBUL reports improvement in all key environmental sustainability indicators that it monitors and publishes in its annual corporate responsibility report. Last year, GLOBUL, GERMANOS and official partners’ shops collected 70% more e-waste than in 2012 due to the incentive campaign aimed at promoting recycling held at the end of the year.

The share of GLOBUL subscribers who had cancelled their paper invoice also increased from 48% in 2012 to 60% last year. Thus, the company saved 145 tons of paper marking 23% year-on-year growth. In addition, 5.96 tons of paper and 1.13 tons of plastic were saved by GLOBUL prepaid customers who recharged their airtime using electronic recharge, via ATM, SMS, etc. Moreover, the company’s employees spent 30% less paper and directed 9.6 tons of paper to recycling.

Despite the expansion of its telecommunication network and the significant growth of mobile data traffic in 2013 GLOBUL managed to reduce its carbon emissions by 9%, thus saving the environment some 2,948 tons of greenhouse gases. The achievement can be mainly attributed to the company’s energy efficiency projects. Over the past three years GLOBUL has installed photovoltaic panels on nearly 50% of its off-grid base stations located in remote areas. As a result, in 2013 alone the company saved 10,000 liters of diesel fuel. In addition, energy consumption dropped by 8% in GLOBUL and GERMANOS offices and by 11% in the companies’ retail network.

Thanks to its focused efforts to protect the environment and promote the green cause, GLOBUL has established itself as a leader in the environmental sustainability field in the country. According to a representative marketing survey for 2013, about 80% of the country’s population perceives the company as Bulgaria’s green operator. Last year GLOBUL also received a number of recognitions for its social and environmental responsibility such as the Investor in Society award by the Bulgarian Business Leaders Forum (BBLF), the special Corporate Owner of Electric Car prize by Press Auto Club Bulgaria, a first prize in the 2013 Volunteer Initiative contest and an award by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation.

GLOBUL is the trademark under which Cosmo Bulgaria Mobile EAD offers mobile telecommunication services in Bulgaria. As of the end of December, 2013, GLOBUL has over 4.0 million active subscribers, while its services are available to 99.98% of Bulgaria’s population, covering over 99.49% of the country’s territory. GLOBUL UMTS network covers 96.09% of the population. Since 1 August 2013 GLOBUL is а part of Telenor Group – leading telecommunication company which operates in 13 countries in Europe and Asia and has 166 million subscribers.
