Dundee Precious Metals Backs Schools in Chelopech

It was an unusual first school day at St. St. Cyril and Methodius school in Chelopech. Invited by Dundee Precious Metals Chelopech H.E. Jonathan Allen, British Ambassador to Bulgaria, launched the school year at the renovated school building that is also home to the foreign language high school owned by the mining company. Ambassador Allen handed English language certificates to five students of the high school who had passed Cambridge University tests.

According to Mr. Valchin Uzunov, Dundee Precious Metals Chelopech Production Director and acting Executive Director, lifelong learning and professional development is a brand value. He quoted the company’s commitment to invest in education as a top priority in securing sustainable development and responsible civil society.

The company is also committed to supporting the Chelopech foreign language high school. This country’s only high school owned by a private company is Dundee Precious Metals’ most successful social project. Established 18 years ago by the previous mine operators and open to local youth who pass the entrance exams the school is a prime example of an educational establishment based on the interaction of business and the educational system.

Education is the foundation of a successful professional career for youth in the region, Dundee Precious Metals Chelopech believe. The company has set some long-term objectives: supporting future leaders and providing conditions for expanding the potential and the social mobility in the region. By financing the school the mine operator invests in quality education for children, a good start for their future progress.

The school’s success lies in the combination of best student/ teacher ratio and highly qualified teachers. Over the last 5 years every single graduate of the school went to either college or university. Most of them enrolled at Bulgaria’s top universities and some went to study abroad. Many of the school’s graduates get jobs at Dundee Precious Metals.
