On global level, METRO aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. In fulfillment of this goal, METRO Bulgaria invests in a number of projects in the field of energy efficiency, which aim to reduce the company's carbon footprint in our country.

Investment projects:
LED lighting in all stores
Systems for using waste heat from refrigeration systems for heating
Systems for using waste heat from refrigeration systems to heat water
Sliding doors of meat sales halls in stores
Glass doors on refrigerators to prevent energy loss
Photovoltaic systems
Charging stations for electric cars
F-Gas – replacement of refrigeration installations with those using natural refrigerant CO2 – removal of freon
Using natural gas instead of diesel fuel
A system for controlling climate systems in stores
Communication:
- Internal campaign aimed at employee awareness and engagement
- An external campaign aimed at the general public, aiming at achieving awareness of the company's energy projects
Project Results
Thanks to projects implemented in the last ten years, we are expected to save 11.6 million kWh of electricity in 12 months, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of households in a city with about 17,000 inhabitants. Carbon emissions will decrease by 8,516 tons – the same as the annual emissions of 720 passenger cars.
