Project Aim

BILLA is clearly aware of its responsibility towards natural resources and society. The global targets on which the chain focuses are part of the REWE Group's sustainability strategy and include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels and reaching climate neutrality in 2040. BILLA Bulgaria puts daily effort and strategic vision into implementing green practices. One of the chain's priorities in 2023 is to reduce paper consumption. That is why BILLA has completed the replacement of all paper labels in its 158 stores across the country, replacing them with electronic ones. As well as making it easier for employees, the electronic labels are part of BILLA's sustainable innovations to limit its negative impact on the environment.

Project Target Group

BILLA's promo week starts on Thursday, which means that to prepare for it, the store's team has in the past had to generate, print and replace between 5 000 and 10 000 labels across its larger sites. That's tons of paper on an annual basis. Now, thanks to electronic displays, that process is now completely digitized, and employees can focus on better customer service.

Project Duration

BILLA is the first retailer in Bulgaria to start equipping its stores with electronic labels. The pilot site of the project is the one in Serdika Center in Sofia in 2017. In the period 2022-2023, the active transformation from paper to digital labels is underway, and in October last year, BILLA has already implemented the new digital solution in all its outlets in the country.

Project Activities

The entire team of BILLA Bulgaria welcomed the change with great excitement and eagerness, not only because of the great relief of the workflow, but also because of the symbolic importance of digital labels for the green transformation of the company. The team even celebrated the removal of the last paper label by having it framed and hung on the "Wall of Fame" in the company's head office. The company's media partners also play an important role in the project. They give visibility to BILLA's daily efforts to conduct its business activities in harmony with nature. The cooperation between the media partners and the company contributes to educating the general public about business changes in favour of nature.

Project Results

BILLA Bulgaria is the first company from the CEE region in the REWE Group to introduce electronic labels in all its outlets. Thanks to the implementation of the project, the chain will reduce paper consumption by 60%. The introduction of electronic labels also has a great added value for customers, as it reduces the possibility of error by over 97%. Now all the information about the items is generated by a system that is centrally managed and thus, in addition to making the work of the store staff much easier, the possibility of human error is eliminated.
