Project Aim
"Dundee Precious Metals Chelopech" EAD invests in the education of young people through its Private English Language Secondary School – Chelopech. This is the only profiled high school in Bulgaria that is owned by a mining company. This is the most successful project in the company's social policy. It was established in 1995 in partnership with the Chelopech municipal council, and it is the first educational institution in the region of Srednogorie that offers intensive study of foreign languages. At that time, the Chelopech mine was owned by an Irish company and the need for English-speaking local people in a village of 1,400 inhabitants was growing.The school has been developing for almost 30 years and is gradually establishing itself among the best in the territory of the Sofia region.
Project Target Group
The project is aimed at stakeholders external to the company:
• Local community of Srednogorie region (7 municipalities ), including students, parents
• Students and parents from settlements close to the region – Karlovo, Sopot, Kalofer, Etropole, Panagyurishte, etc.
• Тeachers
Every year, the school conducts an information campaign with the aim of popularizing its activities and recruiting new students - it organizes an open doors day, develops and distributes informational materials.
Project Duration
The high school was established in 1995 as а common initiative of the management of the Chelopech Mine and the Chelopech Municipal Council. For its almost 30-year history, the educational institution has established itself as a highly successful educational model supported by mining business. For last 20 years, the company has invested in the education of young people from Chelopech and the region, making possible the existence and development of the school by providing all the funding for this.
Project Activities
The private high school in Chelopech provides the opportunity to study a maximum of 30 children in each graduating class, divided into 2 classes. There is an annual intake for seventh graders. Selection is made through application, examination and ranking. 21 highly qualified teachers and 2 support staff take care of the educational process. Students actively participate in various projects in Bulgaria and other countries, incl. implement their ideas in Chelopech and the region, related to solving social problems with a manifestation of civic self-awareness and responsibility. Interest clubs have been formed. In recent years, because of the good educational preparation of the students, the school ranks in the top 3 in the Sofia region in terms of success in the state matriculation exams. DPM supports and participates in initiatives with students, provides logistical support, scholarships, awards, gifts for excellent students. In 2023 several student projects were jointly implemented: "White T-shirts for a colorful future" (about bullying at school), "Recycle with a cause" (collecting paper and planting trees), "I CAN" (painting walls in the children's ward of the local hospital).
Project Results
For almost 30 years,700 students have graduated from PELSS. 95% of them continued their education in higher education institutions.The school is distinguished by high achievements and excellent realization of graduates.It is leading in the Srednogorie region.According to a trend established in recent years and the average result of the two matriculation exams held, the school has the highest average success rate in the district.Over the years, students have qualified and won numerous competitions.
