The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) is the official governing body of association football in Bulgaria, mandated with the comprehensive development, regulation, and promotion of the sport nationwide. Established in 1923, the BFU operates under the auspices of the Bulgarian Ministry of Youth and Sport and is fully affiliated with both FIFA and UEFA, ensuring that Bulgarian football adheres to the highest international standards and best practices in governance, competition, and development.
As the largest sports federation in the country, the BFU oversees an extensive football ecosystem that includes professional and amateur competition structures, national teams across all age groups and formats (men’s, women’s, and futsal), and key domestic competitions such as the Bulgarian First League and Bulgarian Cup. Through its network of licensed clubs and registered players, the BFU plays a pivotal role in fostering pathways from grassroots participation to elite performance, contributing to both community engagement and the national sporting identity.
The Union has a demonstrated track record in securing and managing strategic investments, including infrastructure financing through FIFA Forward and UEFA HatTrick programmes, which have enabled the development and operation of training facilities and pitches throughout Bulgaria. Building on this foundation, the BFU is implementing a new long-term strategic framework for 2026–2030, designed to modernise Bulgarian football and align it with contemporary societal, economic, and governance expectations. The strategy is structured around four core pillars — Offering Football for All, Developing Clubs and Competitions, Representing Bulgaria, and Accelerating Women’s Football — supported by three strategic enablers: Relationships, Investment, and Leadership. Together, these elements shift the federation from a predominantly competition-administration model toward a holistic ecosystem approach that prioritises participation, talent development, institutional capacity, and measurable outcomes.
This forward-looking agenda underscores the Union’s aspiration to evolve into a modern sportsinstitution that not only governs football but also champions positive societal impact.
