BBLF Board Visits Dundee Precious Metals Chelopech

BBLF members toured Bulgaria’s top hi-tech mine

At the latest board retreat held on 13 June 2014 the BBLF Board did not simply get out of Sofia but went underground visiting the hi-tech pit of Dundee Precious Metals in the village of Chelopech. The host, CEO Nikolay Hristov personally took top managers of BBLF member companies to the underground galleries acquainting them with the major production processes.

The most exciting part of the visit was the striking walk some 600 m down. The guests had the chance to see for themselves that contemporary mining is unthinkable without the advance of high technologies: operators steer up-to-date subterranean machines using digital and electronic devices and each of the activities underground is monitored on screen in the control zone above the ground. All the innovations strive to secure that operations are not only more efficient  but also safe both for staff workers and the environment. Over 900 people, mostly from Chelopech and the region, are employed by the company.

The tour also included a visit to the nearby mining waste disposal facility and watching the full cycle of ore mining processing in the renovated plant. The guests got familiar with the healthy eating programme as well as the large-scale initiatives in support of infrastructure, social and culture projects in Chelopech and the nearby municipalities.

At the end of the impressive tour BBLF representatives agreed that what they saw by far outgrew their expectations of what contemporary mining looked like.
