BBLF Raised BGN 46,000 for Healthcare and Education Projects

The 11th Annual Charity Ball rallied over 100 leading members of the business community

BBLF traditionally starts its event calendar with a charity event that convenes the responsible companies in support of social good causes. The 11th edition of the gala on 30 January 2019 at Sofia Hotel Balkan was attended by Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Eva Maydell, member of the European Parliament, raised over BGN 46,000 for worthy projects in healthcare and education. The amount was raised in the charity auction and raffle that featured attractive items and experiences which were all donated by BBLF member companies and supporters.

The event gathered over 100 leading members of the business community. They were greeted by Sofia mayor Fandakova, an honorary member of BBLF and long-term patron of the Ball. She thanked members of the Forum for their efforts over the last 20 years to transform the economic and social environment and in support of social causes.

Positive changes in major areas of social development have often been the result of the ideas, initiative and hard effort of the private sector. I would like to urge you to provide support, once again, to projects that are fundamental for our future: quality healthcare and a great education, BBLF Chairman Iravan Hira said upon opening the event.

Part of the funds will benefit the large-scale breast cancer screenings programme performed by Sofia Municipality and a number of municipal hospitals for five years now. BBLF has been a partner the campaign from its very start; dozens of thousands of women have been examined since. Our experience shows that early stage breast cancer is not a death sentence, Dr Gergana Kolarova, executive director of St Sofia hospital said.

A second part of the funds raised will support the Leadership Academy for Headmasters, a pilot project that aims at training headmasters to be successful managers of their schools. The project is under the patronage of minister of education and science Krasimir Valchev and will be carried out by Education Bulgaria 2030 Association. Eva Maydell, who is also a cofounder of the association, asked guests to show they care: The economy of the future belongs to the educated and the skilled, a goal that calls for the united efforts of all stakeholders: business, the public sector, the civil society and educators.

In addition, proceeds from the raffle will support the Lokomat for Bulgaria fundraising initiative to purchase a much needed gait rehabilitation device. It was presented by Maria Shishkova, BBLF Board member: 10 years ago the BBLF Charity Ball stood behind in vitro procedures long before they became a national policy. Tonight I would like to invite you to support a campaign that aims at helping lots of people to live an active life.

The biggest seller in the live charity auction was a meeting with Jyrki Katainen, European Commission Vice-President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness who joined us in a video message. The former Finnish prime minister and the two best bidders discuss the labour market of the future. Other highlights included works by artists Dimitar Neron Kazakov, Iliya Beshkov, Atanas Hranov; a ball signed by the rhythmic gymnastics national team; an exclusive edition of The Talmud from Maxim Behars private collection; entertainment and experience vouchers; original gifts from foreign ambassadors to Sofia; and many more.

Live performances of opera diva Marena Balinova and harpist Yana Doynova contributed to the galas ambience and so did actor and TV celebrity Aleksander Kadiev who hosted the charity auction and raffle.
