CSR PROFILE BOOK Questionnaire 1. How does the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility correspond with the mission and heritage of your company? DZI is the largest wholly-owned Bulgarian financial and insurance institution and a major leader of the business community in Bulgaria. DZI offers a full range of financial services including life and non-life insurance, corporate and retail banking, asset management, mortgage loans, health services, real estate and tourism. DZI has over 60 years of history in the insurance markets and employs about 2,600 individuals while also relying on a network of over 120 independent insurance brokers and over 9,700 independent insurance agents. The motto of the DZI's "Bulgarian financial institution" highlights our corporate mission. Bulgarian means "relating to Bulgaria or its people" and that is one of our main corporate goals. DZI has a history in the insurance business of more than 60 years during which it has served the people of Bulgaria. Today in the highly-dynamic business environment DZI has grown into an even bigger player on the financial market offering a full range of services, but has never been unfaithful to its most valuable stakeholders - the Bulgarian citizens. Today DZI is proud to be named the "people's financial institution." A September 2004 poll showed that over 80% of the Bulgarian public listed DZI's insurance companies as the "most trusted insurance brands." That is why DZI is closely linked with the Bulgarian society and being a corporate responsible citizen is just a second nature of the Bulgarian financial group. Altogether DZI employees 12,300 Bulgarians, which makes DZI as one of the main employers. CSR CATEGORIES 2. What is your company's CSR involvement with the COMMUNITY? Being a socially responsible company is imbedded in DZI's core values. Mr. Kyulev, President of the Board of Directors and CEO of DZI believes that a "good businessman is a good corporate citizen" and that every well managed company has to be involved in philanthropic activities, that should make better the community and society in which it operates. This is why throughout the years DZI has been actively involved in a variety of charitable activities. Since 2000, DZI has provided for many of the material needs of a number of orphanages around the country, supplying them with the most needed supplies and accommodation. Whenever needed DZI has provided free surgeries and medical attention to children in the orphanages and free insurance to the orphanages through the insurance branch. Deeply touched by the misfortune of the orphans and believing that they should be given a hand up in life and given the opportunity to show that they are worth nothing less than any other child, DZI has also provided them with employment opportunities, leading to life-changing and life-challenging opportunities for them. In the spring of 2005, Mr. Kyulev created the DZI Foundation, as a way of channelling his personal philanthropic interests in the areas of health and human trafficking. Recognizing that these issues are of vital importance to Bulgaria and her people, this new DZI "branch" seeks to mitigate the problem of human trafficking which often targets the most vulnerable segments of society, women and children. At the same time, it seeks to promote better health for Bulgaria's citizens through initiatives in this area. At DZI Foundation, we believe that addressing both issues will serve to increase the stability and security of both Bulgaria and the region. Just a few days after the DZI foundation was created it has made its first grant to the National Investigation Agency (Национална Следствена Служба). The funding was for printing two methodology books for the NIA for the fighting against terrorism and human trafficking. 3. What is your company's CSR involvement with the ENVIRONMENT? -- 4. What is your company's CSR attitude towards your EMPLOYEES? DZI Group owns and manages nine companies, 150 branches, an additional 300 sales points and net assets of more than Euro 500,000,000, but yet the upper management undoubtedly recognizes DZI employees as the most valuable asset of the company. DZI highly values its employees and shows its appreciation by providing excellent work conditions and various social benefits: special rates for life and medical insurance, free medical care provided by DZI Health. DZI has recently started an "open door" policy to encourage its employees to work in teams and to promote a friendly work environment. DZI is an equal-opportunity employer and not only respects differences, but also encourages diversity between its employees. 5. What is your company's CSR involvement with YOUNG PEOPLE and EDUCATION? Embedded in DZI's mission is to promote innovative business and management strategies while staying true to the 60-years old traditions. The young people at DZI resemble the innovation and education resembles traditions. This is why DZI always encourages young people to apply for positions every year, by offering a number of internship programs through universities with business degrees. Practical training and workshops are almost impossible to organize, because of the large number of DZI employees in every division, but DZI management has found another, considered by many, more effective way to promote learning, and that is through an open door policy and friendly environment and teamwork. 6. What is your company's practice of BUSINESS ETHICS? DZI Group is perhaps the most recognized Bulgarian brand name and is a leader in the present-day Bulgarian business society.
