Questionnaire

1. How does the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility correspond with the mission and heritage of your company?
Shell is one of the largest corporate ‘social investors’ in the world. In 2000 Shell companies contributed US$ 139 Mln in voluntary social investment, of which some US$ 85 Mln was Shell share.
Social investment on national level is an important component of the ‘license to operate’.
It is also a way to meet local expectations of the communities and societies, where Shell operates.

2. What is your company's CSR involvement with the COMMUNITY?
There are few examples of Shell’s CSR involvement with the community:
- Offering jobs at Shell service stations to orphan kids, graduates in secondary school
- an initiative of Shell BG since 1998 when Shell offered 60 jobs nationwide; initiative reinforced every other year by offering about 10 jobs for forecourt assistants /servicing customers to fill fuel, clean the windows of the car, check the oil etc; equal opportunities provided to these children;
- on the job training provided to the orphan kids in Shell service stations;
- Road safety activities – long-term commitment and support to the respective state and local institutions involved in this activity and own initiatives
- National campaign ‘To save 200 human lives, to put the safety belts’ – 2001
- National educational campaign ‘Test for safety driving with Shell’ - 2002; tour of the ‘360 degrees’ simulator and the ‘Sudden stop’ simulator testing the reactions of the drivers in 10 Bulgarian cities;
- Financial support for the issuing of a training tool for I – III grade ‘Alone on the road’ – 2001/2002;
- Support to the National campaign ‘Speed and safety’ – 2003, increasing the awareness of the drivers about the risks on the road.


3. What is your company's CSR involvement with the ENVIRONMENT?
There are many examples of how Shell has contributed during the years of its operation in Bulgaria:

1. Shell is committed to developing purer fuels and has been leading the way in Europe. Purer fuels like V-Power Racing, EuroDiesel and Lead Replacement Petrol are in sale by Shell in Bulgaria.

2. Shell recognises low sulphur as a most important fuel parameter for enabling reduced vehicle emissions, particularly in the case of modern direct injection vehicles which are energy efficient and emit low levels of CO2. Thus Shell was the first petrol company, which has introduced in Bulgaria low sulphur Diesel at its service stations.

3. Shell is the first petrol company in Bulgaria, which has introduced the vapour recovery stage 1 /investing about $ 5 000 in the network of 76 service stations in Bulgaria/ and when it comes to new stations it is installing the stage 2 of vapour recovery equipment on the sites.



4. What is your company's CSR attitude towards your EMPLOYEES?
Shell Bulgaria has biannual Shell People Survey to measure employees’ attitude and satisfaction. There is a policy of Open Resourcing that gives opportunity of each employee to apply for a job within Shell Group of Companies for all businesses across the world based on competence requirements.
There are different programs focused on upgrading on individual skills – for example addressing people management skills, change management, recognizing and encouraging a culture of appreciation and enabling individual effectiveness.
Shell Bulgaria offers opportunities for its employees both from head offices and Retail network sites for training and development.
Shell has focused recently its activities on diversity and inclusiveness in line with the requirements of the changing environment.
Shell Bulgaria applies new and contemporary ways of working such as flexible working hours, home based work and virtual team work.


5. What is your company's CSR involvement with YOUNG PEOPLE and EDUCATION?
Shell is active in looking for high potential young graduates straight from the universities and offers them carrier path for reaching a high level managerial roles.
Shell offers part time jobs and internships for students, which allows some of them to compete for a job with Shell.


6. What is your company's practice of BUSINESS ETHICS?
Shell Bulgaria has its own Code of Business Ethics, which is the Statement of General Business Principles. Shell companies have as their core values honesty, integrity and respect for people. Shell companies also firmly believe in the fundamental importance of the promotion of trust, openness, team work and professionalism and in pride in what they do. Our underlying corporate values determine our principles. These principles apply to all transactions, large or small, and describe the behavior expected of every employee in every Shell company in the conduct of its business.
Recent examples, which show that we act on strong business principles, are our commitment to contribute to sustainable development, our position on human rights, diversity and inclusiveness, biodiversity, climate change and bribery and corruption.
The ethical standards are part of the contracts, signed with our partners. Each of the contractors of Shell in Bulgaria gets a copy of the Statement of General Business Principles and is obliged to be aware of them and to keep them in the joint operation/ work with Shell.
Shell in Bulgaria like any other Shell operating company in the world initiates every year annual survey among the employees on the issues related to implementation of Shell Business Principles and takes action points as result of it. The company is organizing annual workshops, discussing these issues in an open forum, where also some business partners are invited.
