1. How does the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility correspond with the mission and heritage of your company?
BCAF's mission is to promote the development of philanthropy in Bulgaria, to attract resources for charitable purposes and to assist donors to achieve maximum effect in their charitable activities. As a member of CAF International Network, BCAF works to build the capacity of non-profit organisations, develop trust towards the sector and stimulate and develop philanthropy worldwide. The Foundation has built its donor services around the idea to support businesses and individuals to be effective and efficient givers.

2. What is your company's CSR involvement with the COMMUNITY?
BCAF is committed to helping Bulgarian community-based non-profit organisations and building their capacity to serve local communities through financial support, training and information.
Its areas of training expertise include fundraising methods and skills, NGO management and advocacy. For the period 1999-2004, some 700 organisations have attended its courses, seminars or workshops.

For the same period, BCAF's grant making programmes have distributed 850,000 BGN. In addition to the funds from foreign programmes and private donors, NGOs have raised over 430,000 BGN, contributed by local businesses and individuals to support different social, environmental and socio-economic initiatives.

In order to provide adequate information on attitudes and trends in individual and corporate giving, BCAF carries out regular research (1999, 2000 and 2003). The Foundation has released one specific publication in the Bulgarian language (2001), and launched a new web portal www.bgblago.com (2003)

BCAF organises seminars, conferences and professional workshops for businesses on corporate community involvement, involvement of employees and cause-related marketing - some 20 towns have hosted such seminars by now.

BCAF is actively involved in advocacy efforts, aiming at ultimate changes in tax legislation, concerning and encouraging giving in Bulgaria.

BCAF's payroll giving scheme More and More - the first professional payroll giving initiative in the country - allows employees to make monthly gifts to a variety of causes: medical operations, environment, social activities, youth amateur arts, and scholarships for orphans. For 2003, 36,000 BGN have been raised helping 28 kids, 7 social, 4 environmental and 1 art project. In 2004, the employees of 45 companies participated in the initiatives and the number of supported causes was doubled.

3. What is your company's CSR involvement with the ENVIRONMENT?
BCAF is part of the 'Leaf by Leaf' initiative for collecting waste paper, recycling it and promoting the usage of recycled paper. The Foundation supports this initiative and also helps it raise funds through the payroll giving scheme More and More. BCAF has internal policies on the use of ‘second-hand' paper, and of not throwing away paper.

In its grant making programmes, BCAF has included obligatory clauses for grantees to ensure that no danger to the environment is incurred by their projects or products.


4. What is your company's CSR attitude towards your EMPLOYEES?
BCAF has internal policies which regulate the recruitment, training and motivation of employees. It offers good working conditions, very good remuneration packages and excellent career opportunities.

All staff members are encouraged to volunteer for other NGO activities. Such examples include organisations in Sofia, Sliven, the Rhodopes, etc.

BCAF and its employees have signed a collective labour contract, regardless of the fact that the number of employees has never exceeded 10.

The payroll giving scheme More and More was first offered to BCAF employees, who became its first givers. Its employees give to all causes supported by the scheme.

5. What is your company's CSR involvement with YOUNG PEOPLE and EDUCATION?
BCAF participated in the Manager for a Day project, initiated by Junior Achievement Bulgaria and the BBLF, inviting young people to share the inside company environment with the Organisation. The cause of JA Bulgaria is also supported through BCAF's scheme More and More.

Since 2003 BCAF, funded by the Balkan Children and Youth Foundation, has been partnering with the Organisational Support Foundation in a consultative-training programme for capacity building of 25 youth servicing NGOs.

6. What is your company's practice of BUSINESS ETHICS?
BCAF is a grantee of the BBLF Business Ethics Standard.
The Foundation has bylaws for its public benefit activity, which describe the internal regulations on:
- procurement
- environmet
- impartiality and lack of conflicts of interest (in grantmaking primarily)
- relations with employees.

BCAF is a founding member of the Bulgarian Donors' Forum (2003) and has helped the Forum design and adopt its Code of Ethics.
